Poplar Grove Farm

Object or Artifact: Confederate Currency

Listen, we know this stuff looks cool, but none of it is valuable. For real. We are just very good storytellers, so don't steal our old stuff.

History and Details Regarding

Confederate Currency

These 1864 bills were collected and displayed by Sallie Fitzhugh in the Parlor of The Farmhouse. They had been scotch taped to a piece of paper and, after many years on display, fallen to the bottom of the picture frame. In 2023, Jenny Smith remounted them in a new picture frame she acquired in the Rock Hill Buy Nothing Group on archival paper using archival photo corners.

Two each of the 5, 10, 20, and 50 bills are displayed showing the fronts and backs. The 50 bills are Jefferson Davis bills. Sallie chose 1864 bills because that was the last year of the confederacy. All notes are “blue backs”, meaning they are printed with blue ink on the reverse.
